In October 2016, I took a leap of faith and just before the closing date for entries, I submitted a video for South Africa’s first Cell C Break The Net Competition in search for SA’s next Youtube sensation. I had just recently started my very own channel and although I had been (and still am) obsessed with Youtube, I was very new to the whole Youtubing world, and being a creator is a whole different ball game.
I was ecstatic when I got the call to say that I had made it into the Top 30, selected from hundreds of entries. And thus began an exciting and educational journey as part of the Cell C Break The Net competition. Each week we had between 48 and 72 hours to create, film and upload a new video based on a new topic every second week. We then had to promote and get as many views and shares on our video to make it through to the next round.
After making it through to the Top 10, in a very close race, I was eliminated. But it will forever be one of the best experiences I’ve been through. I networked with so many other content creators and learnt so much about what it means to be a Youtuber. Each week I pushed myself both physically and creatively. It was a whirlwind adventure and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to have been a part of it.
Have a look at my competition videos and some behind the scenes.
