Midweek Matinee

The Midweek Matinee (2015-2016) was an online radio show streamed live on Lucky Radio’s website: www.luckyradio.co.za. We were a niche arts and entertainment show every Wednesday from 14:00 – 16:00 CAT. The focus was mainly for the young, and the young at heart, hosted by Waydene Laing and Patrick Shabangu.

The Midweek Matinee started as a passion primarily for the arts and entertainment, both locally and abroad, as Waydene and Patrick felt there was a gap in the media industry that needed to provide a platform for performers and aspiring artists. They aimed to educate their audiences about the industry through discussions such as “How to put together a resume”, “When to know a casting is a scam”, “Ways to improve your audition skills”, “How to prepare for disappointment”, just to name a few. They also aimed to give behind the scenes insight into the making of theatre shows and films, having the privilege to interview many producers, directors, as well as casts. Waydene and Patrick really unpacked the details of the project in a fun but informative way. They also aimed to give new and relatively unknown shows, performers, and arts brands the platform get their work out to the people, thus aiding to grow the industry and support smaller and local shows.

The Midweek Matinee had the privilege of attending arts events and theatre shows and is proud to have interviewed some amazing and highly international guests such as Kavi Shastri (comedian from Battle of the Sexes from India), Nathan Belt (as Elvis from Texas), Philippe Cohen and Philippe Orza (from Geneva Ballet), and Robin Parsons (as Michel Jackson in Forever Jackson from the UK). They also had some incredible South African guests such as Timothy Moloi, Mortimer Williams, Quintin Wils, Chris Forrest, Nicholas Nkuna, Christopher Jaftha, Sara Bletcher and many, many more.

Midweek Matinee was an idea conceptualized by Waydene and Patrick after brainstorming what they both felt passionate about and filling the gap in the market. Arts and entertainment is in their blood. Waydene and Patrick have always been excited to motivate and inspire other young artists, professionals, and the average non-theatrical listener.
