It’s no secret that I love food! And even through the middle of trying to “diet” before my wedding, (whatever that is!) I couldn’t resist the invitation to try out the Valentine’s Menu Preview at Jimmy’s Killer Brands in Ormonde. Situated in the newly renovated Ormonde Shopping Centre in the South of Johannesburg, Jimmy’s Ormonde is aimed at creating a family-style sit down restaurant a takeaway prices. I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with some Joburg bloggers (chatting and laughing through the evening), whilst tasting some of the food.
I must be honest, I’ve never been to any of the Jimmy’s franchise stores but I have ordered their hot chips for home delivery that comes in the familiar square box well seasoned with their delicious spices. The whole experience at Jimmy’s Ormonde was just wonderful. The staff were warm and friendly, and the owner made you feel like family. There’s inside and outside seating areas, with a few booth seating areas inside reminiscent of a American diner. Our table was decorated with red Valentine’s roses and candles to set the mood for the month of love.
The food was a no-frills, home-style kinda meal. No extra garnish on the side that can go to waste, and what you get is what you see. Everything was well cooked, well seasoned, and the menu caters for both lemon and herb or spicy for everyone’s taste buds. For starters we had cheesy garlic rolls with chicken strips. The portion size was perfect for a starter, the chicken strips very tasty, and although more cheesy than garlic, the bread rolls were fresh and light. For main meal, we had a selection of savoury rice, butternut, creamed spinach, kingkilp and prawns, as well as greek salad and dressing. Both the kingkilp and prawns came in lemon and herb and spicy, and because I love hot food I preferred the spicy. It’s got enough heat with lots of tomato flavour. The kingkilp was perfectly cooked, and the prawns were meaty. The savoury rice and spinach were fine, nothing too exciting, but the butternut was smooth, creamy and delicious!
For dessert, Jimmy’s Ormonde has a coffee bar that can make any coffee lover’s heart skip a beat with their selection of coffees. I preferred their gourmet milkshakes like caramel popcorn, or Ferro Roche, as well as the chocolaty brownies and ice cream as the perfect sweet treat.
Jimmy’s Ormonde food is quality food with a takeaway vibe. There’s no fuss with easy meals that keep you wanting more. The environment is relaxed, especially surrounded by a beautiful backdrop of Thailand, a photograph the owner took himself while living overseas. With plans to install a wall of fame, Jimmy’s Ormonde already attracts some local sports stars and celebrities. Just off the M1 highway at the Xavier offramp, and nestled inside Ormonde Shopping Centre, which is set to open even more exciting stores in the new renovations, Jimmy’s Ormonde is a great family restaurant for the Joburg South community. It’s definitely worth a try with friends or family, or maybe even a lunch time meal during the day.
